Six months and ten days ago I made a simple deal with myself.
If I wanted Starbucks, I had to walk to get it.
No driving.
No shortcuts.
Coffee had to be earned.
I call it the Starbucks Carrot Method.
And six months later, the results are pretty interesting.
The Basic Rules
The system is simple:
• Walk to Starbucks
• Walk home
• Coffee is the reward
Each trip is about 2.6 miles round-trip.
I aim for 5 days a week, which keeps it realistic instead of turning it into a punishment.
Because if exercise feels like punishment… it usually doesn’t last.
The Six-Month Numbers
Here’s where things get fun.
Time:
6 months, 10 days
Average walk:
2.6 miles
Frequency:
5 days per week
Total walks:
About 137 coffee missions
Total distance walked:
Approximately 356 miles
For perspective, that’s roughly the distance from Phoenix to San Diego.
Not bad for a coffee habit.
Energy Burn
Walking that distance likely burned around:
~32,000 calories
Which equals roughly 9 pounds worth of energy.
My scale shows about 11 pounds lost, which lines up pretty well with the math.
Slow, steady progress — exactly what I wanted.
Health Changes I’ve Noticed
Some of the improvements don’t show up on a scale.
• Stairs stopped winning
• Resting sleep heart rate around 60 bpm
• Visceral fat score in the healthy range
• Walking feels normal instead of like exercise
• Mental health boost from consistent outdoor time
Also worth mentioning: Arizona mornings are actually beautiful if you’re outside early enough.
The Psychology Trick
The real secret isn’t the walking.
It’s the reward.
Instead of saying “I should exercise,” I built a system where the thing I wanted (coffee) only happens if I move first.
It turns motivation into a simple trade.
Coffee for steps.
The Unexpected Side Effect
Walking regularly also adds a lot of incidental exercise to the day.
When you start the morning with movement, it tends to spill into everything else — errands, chores, pinball nights, dancing in the kitchen.
Movement becomes normal instead of something special you have to schedule.
Final Verdict
After six months, the Starbucks Carrot Method is still working.
It’s simple.
It’s repeatable.
And most importantly…
It’s something I actually keep doing.
Which, in the end, might be the most important metric of all.
Still counts.
Still counting.
