Welcome back to Wellness Whiskers Silverballs, where movement in real life still counts, Arizona weather occasionally tries to destroy the scenery, and even a routine Starbucks walk can turn into an unexpected adventure.
Today’s episode includes storm damage, a saxophone player with a musical pop quiz, a cactus putting on a floral extravaganza, and a laundry situation that needs immediate attention.
You know. A perfectly ordinary day. 😂
🌨️ The Great Hailstorm Damage Audit
Remember that little hailstorm that rolled through?
Well, apparently thirty minutes of hail was all it took to thoroughly thrash my walking route.
SWEET BABY JESUS.
I went from having my usual neighborhood walking route to having what amounted to a nature walk and a post-storm damage assessment rolled into one.
The hailstorm left its mark, and I had the photographic evidence to prove it. What had been a familiar, ordinary route suddenly had a whole new look, courtesy of Mother Nature deciding to throw frozen projectiles at the desert.
So today’s walk included an inspection of the aftermath.
There’s something a little surreal about seeing the damage after a storm. You know the weather was bad, but actually walking through the affected area and seeing what happened makes it real in a different way.
And when it’s a route you’ve walked over and over again, you notice the changes.
My little Starbucks walk has become such a regular part of my routine that it’s practically a character in this ongoing wellness adventure. Seeing it take a beating was not exactly what I had planned for the day.
But that’s Arizona for you.
You can plan your walk, check the weather, and think you’ve got everything figured out. Then the sky decides it has other ideas.
Today’s mission: inspect the damage, take the pictures, and appreciate the fact that the storm eventually moved along.
The walking routine continues. The scenery may need some recovery time.
🎷 Raymundo’s Name That Tune: Maroon 5 Edition?
One of the best things about my Starbucks walks is the people I’ve gotten to know along the way.
Enter Raymundo Ruiz.
By day, Raymundo handles shopping center maintenance at the Starbucks where I make my regular stop. By night, he’s a saxophone player.
And somewhere in between, he apparently decided that my walking routine needed an interactive music trivia component.
Raymundo gives me pop quizzes: Name That Tune!
Because apparently walking to Starbucks isn’t enough. I also need to keep my musical recognition skills sharp.
Honestly, I love it.
It’s one of those unexpected little connections that makes a routine more enjoyable. You start out simply trying to get your steps in, and along the way, you meet people, develop friendships, and end up having conversations you wouldn’t have had otherwise.
And now there’s a potential new addition to Raymundo’s repertoire: Maroon 5!
I’m curious to see where that goes. A saxophone version of Maroon 5? I’m not opposed to this development.
Of course, now I may have to prepare myself for the next musical pop quiz. I can’t have Raymundo thinking I’m slacking off on my music knowledge.
Although, knowing my luck, he’ll play something I’ve heard a thousand times and my brain will immediately forget every note I’ve ever recognized.
That’s how these things work. 😂
But that’s part of the fun. My Starbucks walks aren’t just about distance and steps. They’re also about the little moments of community that happen along the way.
Thanks, Raymundo, for the entertainment and the musical challenges!
🌵 Cactus Flower Explosion!

While the hailstorm was busy making a mess of things, the desert had another surprise waiting.
The cactus flower explosion!
There’s something wonderful about the contrast between Arizona’s weather extremes and the beauty that shows up in unexpected places.
One minute, we’re dealing with a storm that leaves the walking route looking thoroughly thrashed. Then there’s a cactus putting on a spectacular floral display.
Desert plants are tough. They have to be. But when they bloom, they remind us that tough doesn’t mean lacking beauty.
Sometimes the most unexpected things are the ones that make us stop and look.
And after inspecting storm damage, I will gladly take a little floral excitement.
The desert is going to desert. Sometimes that means hail. Sometimes that means flowers. Occasionally, it apparently means both in rapid succession.
I just live here and try to keep up. 😂
🧺 Meanwhile, Back at Home: Operation Laundry
And now we come to the actual damage-control operation of the day.
Laundry.
The cleaning lady is coming, and I have a limited amount of time to get things organized before she arrives.
The laundry baskets need to move. The bed needs protecting. The floor needs to be accessible so she can mop without having to navigate a domestic obstacle course.
There are several possible plans, including moving the baskets into the laundry room or putting the protective comforter on the bed and relocating the baskets onto the dresser.
We’re still working out the logistics.
This is not exactly a glamorous part of the wellness journey, but it’s real life.
And honestly, after a storm-damage inspection and a musical pop quiz, I think a nap before the cleaning lady arrives sounds like a perfectly reasonable next step.
I walk seven days a week. I do Jazzercise four days a week. I have other things going on, too.
I don’t need to turn every day into a competition to see how much I can accomplish before I collapse.
Sometimes the responsible thing to do is get the laundry moving, make the house accessible for cleaning, and give yourself permission to rest.
💜 Wellness Without Perfection
Today’s walk gave me a little bit of everything.
– A familiar route transformed by a hailstorm.
– A chance to inspect and document the damage.
– A visit with Raymundo and the possibility of Maroon 5 joining his saxophone repertoire.
– A cactus putting on a flower show.
– And a reminder that household responsibilities don’t magically disappear just because you’ve already been productive.
This is what wellness looks like in real life.
It’s not a perfectly controlled environment. It’s not a flawless schedule. And it certainly isn’t a guarantee that the weather will cooperate.
It’s showing up, adapting when things change, enjoying the people you encounter, and doing what you can with the day you’ve got.
Some days, the victory is a great walk.
Some days, it’s discovering a new musical connection.
Some days, it’s appreciating a cactus flower.
And some days, it’s getting the laundry out of the way before the cleaning lady arrives.
All of it counts.
Walk 4 of 5: Storm damage, saxophone tunes, desert flowers, and a little domestic damage control.
One step at a time. One tune at a time. One load of laundry at a time.
Movement in real life still counts.
Always!💜
