When an attempt at a leisurely walk turns on its head.

Some Sunday mornings are made for a leisurely walk, a little fresh air, some bird watching, and a nice iced coffee.

And then there’s the Sunday when your brain decides to open approximately 47 browser tabs before you’ve even made it out the door.

Welcome to today’s episode of Steps for Sips Sunday, where the steps were plentiful, the weather couldn’t make up its mind, and my brain was apparently running on a software update that nobody authorized.

Take One

Sunday morning. Time to get up, get dressed, and head out for a leisurely walk.
Simple, right?

HA.
I woke up, was trying to decide what to wear, went through six variations of cat shirts including Gargamel and Azreal, and this cool black cat shirt with green rain effects on it. Black cat shirt is a go, need exercise shorts snd socks, Andrew is still asleep,  pick them in the dark. Black shorts, green socks, check and check. Shoes check. Earrings negotiated, Purse/Cross-body check. Run out the door, through the garage, and around the block. Screech to a halt realizing I don’t have my cup and I hadn’t even let Fitbit know I started my walk! Great! Going back.

The Great Reusable Cup Retreval Mission

Naturally, that meant going home and collecting the cup – which of course turned into dealing with the mail and Temu packages, opening earrings, unpacking shirts for the laundry, temporarily losing my phone, finding my phone, remembering the garage door, and finally getting the Starbucks order sorted out.

You know. A simple little errand.

I also discovered duplicate earrings that I actually like, so at least the chaos delivered a tiny reward.

The coffee mission was eventually successful.

The Circle K Diet Dr Pepper mission, however, was less successful. The soda fountain was completely out of order. Bottled soda it is.

Apparently, today was going to be a character-building exercise.

A Walk With Weather Commentary

Eventually, I got out for the walk.

The morning was cloudy, breezy in that possibly-real-or-possibly-just-passing-cars kind of way, and threatening rain. The mountains were doing their usual impressive thing, and the neighborhood provided its own entertainment.

There were birds everywhere.

I spotted birds sheltering in the trees when the rain moved through, including a couple of woodpeckers hanging around a palm tree. They were clinging to the trunk and chattering away beneath the fronds. No drumming concert yet, but they were certainly having a conversation.

The neighborhood’s glossy black feathered residents were also around. Some of these birds seem to leapfrog from tree to tree as I walk, keeping an eye on what I’m doing. I haven’t officially confirmed their identities, but I’m beginning to suspect there’s a bird version of Neighborhood Watch operating along my route.

The mountains, the trees, the birds, and the clouds all made for a lovely morning outside.

The weather eventually added a little rain to the experience.

Because apparently looking at the rain from a distance wasn’t enough.

Fitbit Had Receipts

The walk was officially recorded, and Fitbit had the numbers ready.

– Outbound walk: 2.41 miles in 1 hour, 8 minutes.
– Return walk: 1.31 miles in about 45 minutes.
– Total walking distance: 3.72 miles.
– Total walking time: About 1 hour and 53 minutes.
– Steps: 9,478 by the time I checked.
– Sleep: 7 hours and 10 minutes, with a sleep score of 85.

I also hit my 8,000-step goal during the morning.

Walk Receipts

Not bad for a walk that included weather negotiations, bird observations, and enough mental side quests to qualify as an open-world video game.

The first walk was mostly easy effort, while the return trip had more time in the moderate heart-rate zone. So even though I wasn’t trying to turn this into a workout challenge, the movement added up.

That’s the thing about walking. Sometimes the best exercise is the kind that gets you outside and lets you notice the world around you.

Even when the world is damp.

The Grocery List Has Entered the Chat

I made it home a little damp, but happy to have completed the walk.

And then I remembered the rest of Sunday’s agenda.

There is a grocery run waiting for me. Not a quick stop for milk and bread. A proper grocery run with a list that includes milk, ice cream, eggs, cottage cheese, shredded cheese, pie crust, carrots, fruit, Super Greens for salad, avocados, onions, garlic, stewed tomatoes, canned beans, cornbread, maybe muffins, taco seasoning, dental picks, frozen corn, pizzas, and toilet paper.

Yes, the list has range.

And yes, I wrote ruffage on the list because sometimes a little personality needs to make its way into the produce department.

After the grocery shopping, there’s dinner at my mom’s house tonight.

So the leisurely Sunday walk has turned into a full-day production involving errands, groceries, family time, and whatever else my chaos brain decides to add to the schedule.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Fitbit starts asking whether grocery shopping counts as a separate workout.

Wellness Without Perfection

Here’s what I’m reminding myself today: the walk doesn’t have to be the whole day’s accomplishment.

It can simply be one good thing I did for myself before moving on to everything else.

I got outside. I moved my body. I saw the mountains, watched the birds, enjoyed the cloudy sky, and got nearly 9,500 steps before the grocery run even began.

I don’t need to make every day perfectly organized or every movement session perfectly planned. Some days are a neat little checklist. Other days are a series of detours held together by caffeine, a reusable cup, and a handwritten grocery list.

Both kinds of days count.

Movement in real life still counts. Even when real life is cattywampus, the weather is damp, and the soda fountain is broken.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have groceries to buy and dinner to attend. Sunday isn’t finished with me yet!
