Moderation used to be hard for me. Because once I start something I like… it’s hard to stop.
It wasn’t confusion—
it was momentum.
—
So I changed the setup.
Small plate. No refills.
Key part:
Fill that plate however you want.
This is not about starving.
It’s about learning what a reasonable portion actually looks like.
And by “small plate,” I mean a salad plate—
not a saucer.
Because let’s be honest…
Some of us grew up with dinner plates the size of hubcaps
and the rule:
“Finish your food or you can’t leave the table.”
That sticks with us.
And in my family, food = love. ❤️
There’s always plenty, and it’s meant to be shared.
So instead of fighting that, I work around it.
Smaller plate to start.
No refills.
If I’m still hungry an hour later?
Another small plate. Or a snack.
Not “no more.”
Just “less later,” if needed.
And if I know I’m going into a bigger meal—
I adjust earlier in the day.
Because you can’t control everything…
but you can control something.
One more thing I learned the hard way:
If you eat somewhere where portions, salt, or sugar are higher than usual—
don’t weigh yourself the next day.
That number is often water, not failure.
Instead:
hydrate, stretch, walk,
eat a little lighter—
but don’t starve.
Give it a day or two.
Treat it like a treat.
Fun, a little out of the norm.
No guilt.
Then move on.
Go back to your normal small plate method when you can control it.
Still counts 🔵
