Some cats like birds. Some cats like chasing laser pointers. Some cats like knocking perfectly good objects off countertops just to see what happens.
And then there was 2Cat.
2Cat had a rather sophisticated entertainment preference: Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Before Mr. T took over as the resident senior gentleman of the household, 2Cat held that position. And apparently, he also held a membership in Starfleet.
Andrew went through a phase of watching all the reruns of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Every time he turned on an episode, something magical happened.
2Cat would come skipping and jumping into the room, make his way over to Andrew, hop right into his lap, and settle in for the show.
Every. Single. Episode.
I’m not talking about a cat who occasionally wandered through the room and glanced at the television. No, sir. This was a dedicated viewer. He had a routine. He had a favorite viewing spot. And he had absolutely no intention of missing his favorite show.
I don’t know if it was Captain Picard, Commander Riker, Data, or the adventures of the Enterprise that kept him coming back.
Maybe he was fascinated by the warp drive. Maybe he appreciated the diplomacy of the Federation. Or maybe he just knew that Andrew’s lap was the best seat in the house.
Whatever the reason, 2Cat was a bona fide Next Generation fan.
And with the recent passing of Sir Patrick Stewart, seeing that beautiful quote from Captain Jean-Luc Picard about time and cherishing every moment made me think of those afternoons all over again.
Funny how the smallest memories can come rushing back.
A cat jumping into his favorite person’s lap. A television playing in the background. Another episode of the Enterprise crew saving the galaxy.
We don’t always realize we’re making memories while we’re living them.
But those little moments become some of the biggest treasures we carry.
So here’s to 2Cat, the original household Trekkie.
May your sunbeams always be warm, your laps always be available, and may you forever boldly go where no cat has gone before.
