Sometimes, you don’t need a fancy restaurant with white tablecloths and somebody explaining the artistic inspiration behind your three bites of dinner. Sometimes, you just need a good burger, a pile of fries, a little vintage charm, and a guy behind the counter who might be planning a ranch-drinking contest. 😂

Welcome to The Original Hamburger Works, tucked into the west side of downtown Phoenix!

This place has that wonderfully rough-and-tumble, old-school burger-joint vibe that reminds me of The Chuckbox in Tempe. We’re talking rustic surroundings, vintage signs, and a chuck wagon loaded with all the condiments you could possibly need to customize your burger. It’s charming in that unapologetically unfancy way that makes you feel right at home.

And then there was the guy taking orders.

He was joking around with a customer, asking about their order, and somehow got himself tangled up in the question of whether they wanted to drink ranch or barbecue sauce. He corrected himself, but then took the conversation in an entirely different direction by joking about hosting a ranch-drinking contest to see how much people could chug before they barfed.

I mean… GROSS. 🤢

But also? Pretty funny. And honestly, exactly the kind of ridiculous conversation that fits the atmosphere.

And here’s the thing:

when the guy behind the counter started joking about a ranch-drinking contest, Andrew and I apparently had the exact same thought at the exact same time.

Corbin. We’d volunteer Corbin. 😂

Now, before you judge our parenting, let me explain. Corbin is a total foodie, and he’s much more likely than either of us to entertain the idea of an eating contest. So naturally, we looked at each other and silently agreed that our son was the obvious candidate for this particular challenge.

Are we bad parents? Maybe.
Are we hilarious? I’m going with yes.

Besides, I’ve done my time in the eating-contest arena. Back in the day, people used to nominate me for those things all the time. But these days? My stomach has officially submitted its resignation from competitive eating.

I can appreciate a good burger. I can enjoy a pile of fries. But chugging ranch or trying to eat an unreasonable amount of food for bragging rights?

I’m too old for that shit. Corbin, you’re up! 🤣

The Burgers: Half a Pound of Happiness

Andrew went with a half-pound burger topped with grilled mushrooms and onions. I chose a half-pound burger with green chile and pepper jack cheese.

My burger was delicious! The green chile and pepper jack brought that lovely combination of flavor and kick that makes a burger feel a little extra special without getting all fancy about it.

We also ordered a pound of fries to share.

Now, here’s where the story gets interesting.

At some point, I got up to load up on condiments. When I came back, I kept eating fries while enjoying my burger.

Here’s the thing about Andrew: he has a system. When he eats a burger and fries, the fries come first, and the burger comes second. It’s his routine. I know this man.

But somehow, I never actually saw him eat the fries.

Then I looked down at the fry container.

I looked at Andrew.

And I asked the only reasonable question:

“Did I just eat a pound of fries? Please tell me I didn’t eat a whole pound of fries!” 😂🍟

We had ordered them to share, and I genuinely couldn’t remember seeing Andrew eat his portion. Had I somehow polished off the entire pound while he was doing something else? Had I completely lost track of how many fries I’d eaten?

I needed answers. The fry container was empty, and my memory was not providing useful evidence.

The Verdict

The Original Hamburger Works has the kind of personality I love: casual, quirky, a little chaotic, and full of character. It’s got that classic burger-joint atmosphere where the food is hearty, the surroundings have stories to tell, and the people behind the counter aren’t afraid to have a little fun.

The green chile and pepper jack burger gets a thumbs-up from me. The vintage decor is a delight. The chuck wagon condiment station is a fun touch.

The ranch-drinking contest? I’ll pass, thanks.

And the pound of fries? Well, let’s just say that Andrew and I may need to establish a better system for sharing fries in the future. For the record, he ate his share while I was at the condiments wagon, so I did not eat the whole pound. 😂

Foodie Friday takeaway:

Sometimes the best restaurant adventures aren’t about fine dining. They’re about good food, goofy conversations, and discovering that you might have eaten a pound of fries when nobody was looking.

And that’s a meal worth remembering!
