Sleep Matters (Yes, Really)
Sleep matters—big time—for both physical and mental wellness. I’m not a doctor or therapist, just a real person sharing what I’ve learned along the way. I’ve felt the difference myself, and I’m still going.
This topic keeps coming up in my Fitbit Premium AI Coach chats, so I figured it was worth sharing here. He’s not a doctor either, but let’s be honest—he knows stuff. And a lot of it lines up with what I’ve experienced firsthand.
Why Sleep Is Such a Big Deal
Think of sleep as the reset button for your body and brain. When I’m consistently sleeping better, everything else feels just a little more doable.
Here’s what my Fitbit coach (and my own lived experience) keep pointing out:
易 Brain Function & Mood
Good sleep helps your brain process information, regulate emotions, and clear out mental clutter. When I sleep better, I’m more focused, less anxious, and way more patient—with myself and everyone else. When I don’t? Everything feels harder than it needs to be.
Energy for Movement
I’ve set activity goals because movement is a huge part of my wellness journey. When I’m rested, walks happen. Strength sessions happen. Even incidental exercise (cleaning, errands, pinball tournaments!) feels easier. When I’m tired, motivation drops fast.
️ Decision-Making & Willpower
Sleep deprivation messes with judgment. I notice that when I’m overtired, healthy food choices feel like an uphill battle. When I sleep well, I naturally eat better—not because I’m forcing it, but because my brain is actually cooperating.
⚖️ Sleep & Weight Loss: The Real Connection
This one surprised me early on, but it makes so much sense now.
Appetite hormones: Poor sleep can increase hunger hormones and decrease the ones that signal fullness. Translation: more cravings, especially for high-carb, high-calorie comfort foods.
Metabolism & insulin sensitivity: Not enough sleep can make it harder for your body to use energy efficiently, which can lead to higher blood sugar and increased fat storage.
Consistency: Sleep affects your ability to stay consistent. And consistency—not perfection—is what actually moves the needle.
Physical Restoration
During deep sleep, your body repairs tissue, rebuilds muscles, and supports your immune system. This matters whether you’re lifting weights, walking daily, or just living life.
❤️ Heart & Hormone Health
Consistent, quality sleep helps regulate stress hormones like cortisol and supports long-term heart health. Again—not medical advice—just one more reason sleep deserves a seat at the wellness table.
What I’m Learning Along the Way
I don’t always hit perfect sleep numbers. Real life happens. But I’ve learned that sleep isn’t optional self-care—it’s foundational care. When I protect my sleep, everything else benefits.
This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about paying attention, noticing patterns, and giving yourself credit for showing up—even when progress is messy.
I’m still learning. I’m still going. And if you’re reading this and struggling with sleep, you’re not broken—you’re human.
Still learning. Still going. 👣🪶
More to come.
